Somewhere deep in the “Bush Lied, people died” rhetoric is some idea that Bush “knew” that there weren’t weapons of mass destruction in Iraq – he just used that as an excuse to go into Iraq to get their oil… and it is for that reason that he should be impeached.
I’d like to ask those who hold this view a few questions: Why were weapons of mass destruction a “necessary condition” for unseating Saddam Hussein? Was it necessary for Saddam Hussein to possess nuclear and biological weaponry… and only if that condition was satisfied, then we would have been justified to go to war?
I also have a question for President Bush: Why did you feel it was necessary to use the specter of Saddam Hussein having nuclear and biological weaponry as such a central piece in your public and international relations campaign in the run-up to the war?
My final question is to the American People: why was it necessary to have the specter of a madman like Saddam Hussein in possession of a nuclear bomb, a dirty bomb or an chemical bomb in order to convince us that a war was necessary?
So by now you are asking me the question: why am I asking these questions?
Why? Because the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon and 3000 innocent human beings were destroyed…. not a nuclear bomb, not via a chemical weapon… what weapon was it?
They were destroyed using just 4 box cutters. Cost: less than $10 at Home Depot.
What President Bush should have said was something to the affect that – civilization, as we know it, is now in a battle with barbarians that know no bounds of decency, no respect for the rules of war, no respect for what we consider to be moral behavior. Any state, any government that actively shelters these barbarians or who actively supports these barbarian’s cause has “by default” declared war on all civilized societies. By the very fact that the United States is the leader of the civilized world, that war is declared primarily against the United States.
Afghanistan was “exhibit A” – the Taliban had to be kicked out and to as great extent as possible: destroyed. Bin Laden had to be killed or at least neutered until he could be killed.
Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi Baath Party and his thugs since they were actively sponsoring suicide bombings in Israel had to be “exhibit B”.
Iran, because it has sponsored Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas – all of which are drenched in the blood of innocent terror victims… will most likely be “exhibit C”.
I think it is the hope and the prayer of the civilized world that these early “demonstrations” will prompt governments and populations around the world to act more responsibly. No longer will “terrorism” be a mechanism to do “war on the cheap” – just incite the masses to go on “Jihad” and slaughter the innocents of your enemy – and you can remain safe at home in your palace. What America is saying is that if you try to do this, the same thing will happen as if you declared war on America – you will be dead, your government will disappear and all the thugs who supported you will be on the run.
Why is this the hope and prayer of the civilized world? Because if this technique fails, if exhibits A,B and C aren’t enough to convince the despots of the world to become more “civilized” when they go to war… well, then we will indeed be immersed in a true “World War” where not just thousands will be killed.
So if terrorism is “war on the cheap” waged by barbarians, then our current attempt at the “War on Terror” is “World War on the cheap” – I pray that we succeed.
